This is a typical water front scene from Bristol, Rhode Island. Bristol is a peninsula, which gives the town a lot of different bodies of water, including a few bays, a harbor and what you see here – the Kickemuit River, which is on the east side of town.

I attended the University of Rhode Island where I studied photography under Bart Parker. I graduated with a BFA in fine art photography and a minor in communications. College was always b&w work, hand-processed in the dark room, using many different cameras. It was great fun. After college I worked in the photo-finishing business for many years as well as doing commercial photography. In the 80's I started to shoot only color for my artwork and never returned to the world of black & white - until 2014. I started converting my color digital images to black and white whenever I saw them as intended for bw. I believe the eye you started with does not go away. Thanks very much Connie. Yes, as much fun as the tone version was to create, black & white is always the straight story. You see the subjects in the scene for waht they are, with no color to alter a perception.

Thanks very much Linda. It is remarkable how much better this worked in BW than in color. I also did something in between that worked well enough to by the desktop image on my computer.
