Description
This very nice Buddha statue (with large hands) lives in a very bright area of a stairway in the British Museum. Mind you, stairways in this museum are grand - it is an honorable placement for this fantastic work. This Buddha is looking at a big Buddha statue opposite it that is so tall that it reaches up to the next floor – and these are really high floors.
It is from the late 18th or early 19th century AD, from Rangoon, Burma (Myanmar). It was made using the dry lacquer technique. The wooden and lacquered throne is a modern replacement for the lost original; it was commissioned by the Museum in Mandalay in 1995. This large Buddha image is seated in the lotus position with the legs crossed and the left hand placed in his lap. In the fingers of his right hand is a myrobalan, a small fruit with medicinal properties.
